1Live - Richard Z. Kruspe Interview (Part 1/2)

Back

A 1Live interview with Richard Z. Kruspe. They talk about "Emigrate", its origin, members and Richards past. Part 1/2 (Deutsch/English) 1Live: "Emigrate" is here. If you know the German music scene very well, then you maybe know this name. But in any case, Richard Kruspe. Or do you think that many people already know "Emigrate"? Richard Z. Kruspe: I don't know, but I think the most people know me as Richard Z. Kruspe. 1Live: Firstly we have to say that you play the guitar at "Rammstein". How should I call you? "Richard Z." or "Emigrate"? Richard Z. Kruspe: "Richard" is ok. 1Live: Ok. But "Emigrate" is your new "old ego". You've called your solo album and your project "Emigrate". What were the reasons? Richard Z. Kruspe: It began a few years before. I think it had something with my immigration from Germany to America to do. I see me fixed in New York. New York has it's own „cosmos". At that time, there were different reasons to leave Berlin. One reason was the success with "Rammstein" and I was searching for a new challenge, a new beginning. At that time, I had the feeling that I've crushed „Rammstein", with my creative output. And the band needed some time without me. And I went to New York. 1Live: When was that? To evaluate. Richard Z. Kruspe: That was 2001. Yes, six years. I arrived there and I basically started from scratch. I entrenched myself in an old fire department. And I built a small studio there and I began to write the songs. I had no plan but sometimes the project got a frame and one day I went to my café to get a coffee and I found a piece of paper on the street, on which stoods "Emigrate" with clichés. I though that this explain my situation and I called the project "Emigrate". And this corresponded to my idea at that time and today. 1Live: And what do you think about "Emigrate" today? You said it's six years ago. How has your project developed? Richard Z. Kruspe: At the beginning it was important that I obligate to do this and decide to do something by myself and it is a piece of my personality, which want to do this. It has took a few years to do that and took the responsibility. You can't start such a project and quit it. It tooks part of you and became bigger and bigger. Today I'm happy that I decided to go this way and that I've found my balance. I had extreme problems with "Rammstein", but today I can go back to "Rammstein" and enjoy the time. 1Live: Later we talk about your problems at "Rammstein", because we want to hear the first song of your solo album "Emigrate". "New York City". 1Live: Welcome back. So you've published your album. And at "Emigrate" you play the guitar and you are also the singer. So this is the difference to "Rammstein". What was your feeling when you heard your own voice in one of the songs? Richard Z. Kruspe: "Now... that I am Free." It was an exemption... not to hear the voice, but to sing. I think if you hear your voice at the first time, you'll have a problem with it. Also me. It was very frustrating at the beginning. The reason was, that I am very experienced as a componist. And I know what I wanted to reach. I was unexperienced as a singer and I tried a lot. I go to a coach to learn some things, but I didn't. 1Live: You did everything by yourself, wrote the songs, played the guitar, sang and produced. What about the other instruments? Could you fulfill a dream and pick other musicians from other bands or are that people who nobody knows? Richard Z. Kruspe: At the beginning it was an idea to get this people, because you know this people from traveling and they play in good bands and travel too. The problem was to find a deadline. At some point I stopped searching and the musicians came to me. It begans with the bassist "Arnaud Giroux", whom I met in New York and he had the same fate like me. 1Live: Do I know him? Does he play in a band? Richard Z. Kruspe: He played in a French band "Axel Bouer (?)". The second was the drummer (Henka Johansson) of "Clawfinger". He traveled with "Rammstein". I am interested in his "playing". I show him the songs and he was content. And I have two friends with whom I want to make some music, also my first drummer in my first band "Orgasm detah Gimmick". The second is a good old friend, who works as a producent for example for "Seeed". You know "Seeed"? 1Live: Yes. We are at "1Live" "Richard"! Richard Z. Kruspe: We came together and before went to the sudio I would like to play the songs, because they had to work with all together. I was nervous, I created a band and it was a bit like a blind date, everything works and not. Everything works well and we went in a studio and I took our old producent "Jacob Hellner" and he advised us. 1Live: He is the "Rammstein" producent. Richard Z. Kruspe: Yes. At the beginning I was a bit precarious about the band and our producent told me to play.
