Tabla Beat Science- Devotional

Back

Just a quick vid i made today, thought it'd share it. Great group. Tabla Beat Science Tala Matrix Axiom Records/Palm All Rights Reserved Tala Matrix began as a collaboration between tabla maestro Zakir Hussain and New York-based musician and producer Bill Laswell in an effort to create new fusions of Indian classical rhythms with modern electronic beats. The project has since expanded to incorporate new work from Talvin Singh - a founding member of London's South Asian DJ underground and recipient of the UK's Mercury Prize in 1999, as well as a tabla virtuoso in his own rite - and Bombay native Trilok Gurtu, whose own signature tabla and percussion style has graced recordings with John McLaughlin, Joe Zawinul, violinist L. Shankar and many more. Also featured are Ustad Sultan Khan, world-renowned as a vocalist and soloist on the multi-stringed sarangi, and tabla/drummer/composer Karsh Kale, Tabla Beat Science: Tala Matrixwho has gained a strong following throughout North America as through his Six Degrees Assian Massive debut "Realize". Tala Matrix was released on Bill Laswell's Axiom label in mid-September 2000 and distributed through Chris Blackwell's Palm Pictures/Ryko distribution network. A live show of this magnitude, with universally acclaimed Indian classical musicians playing in an electronic context with live drums, bass, DJs and mixers, has never before been properly performed. It is unusual for Zakir Hussain and Sultan Khan to even consent to such an event, given that they normally perform in a classical or, at the extreme, in a jazz atmosphere. Zakir enjoys a huge draw among the South Asian community and among classical and jazz fans in general; with the more avant-garde and underground club following that Bill Laswell and Karsh Kale have built over the years, a "Tabla Beat Science" live show with these names alone can easily generate a massive buzz in any live musical festival environment. With the added participation of Sultan Khan and a few additional DJs and musicians from New York who understand the cross-cultural references shared by traditional Hindustani and urban electronic music, the show could just as easily become a milestone in the live presentation of "world fusion" music from a South Asian perspective. On August 13th, 2001 Tabla Beat Science performed to a capacity crowd of 13,000 people at the Stern Grove Festival in San Francisco, California. The live recording of the concert will be released in its entirety in the Spring of 2002 by Palm Pictures. The concert consisted of TBS core memebers Zakir Hussain, Ustad Sultan Khan, Bill Laswell and Karsh Kale; along with special guests, the MIDIval Punditz from New Dehli on laptop, DJ Disc on turntables, Fabian Alsultany on synthesizers, and Ethiopian singer Gigi.
