Borg protesting a point, McEnroe giving one away

Back

Bjorn Borg won this match from John McEnroe, 6-4, 6-7 (3), 7-6 (2). In case it's not clear, Borg makes his first protest at 3-all in the second-set tiebreak. I've included the three points that followed because what McEnroe did was extraordinary. Borg and McEnroe played this match in January 1981, after splitting five-set finals at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open. It was one of the most highly anticipated matches of the Open Era. A sellout crowd of 19,103 was in attendance at Madison Square Garden. At the time this constituted a record and was listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as one of the largest crowds ever to attend a tennis match.
