Kobe Bryant 2007: 50 points vs Hornets (16-29 FG)

Back

Date: March 23, 2007 After having scored 60 points only 24 hours ago, nobody thought Kobe would have enough in the tank to go for 50 again against the defensive-minded hornets. In a masterful display of inhumane conditioning and immaculate skill, Kobe played every minute of the 1st half, finishing it with 27 points. The NBA.COM website kept updating his point total realtime as he was on pace for another record-setting night. After a "Quiet" 27 point 1st half, Kobe came out and shot 7/8 in the third, finishing the quarter with 44 points on 15/23 shooting. Kobe's only rest in this entire game was the last 1:22 of the 3rd. In the 4th quarter, the Hornets doubled Kobe on the catch and were determined to not have him go for 60. Regardless of their efforts, Bryant still got 50 on a blistering 16-29 FG shooting. Despite the great defense of the long-armed Rasual Butler and active Devin Brown, Kobe was still able to score 50 with ease. After the game he said, "It's like I see everything in Slow motion." While Bryant seemed to be in a great mood, Rasual Butler was not. Taking great pride in his defense, Butler said, "It doesn't feel good at all to be in the history books for something like this." Here are some more quotes from the Hornets players and coaches about Kobe after the game: "You love watching greatness. And right now you're watching one of the greatest players of our time. I think the thing that makes him head and shoulders (above everyone) is his attitude. I think that's the thing that separates him from the other guys. There are still some guys in this league that's probably just as athletic if not more athletic than Kobe, but there not tougher mentally. I don't think there's anybody in the game tougher than him mentally. He's just so good." — Hornets coach Byron Scott. "Right now we're witnessing greatness. I think when it's all said and done and he's gone from this game, we're going to take a look at what he did and really appreciate it. Few of us appreciate it right now. I'm one of them who does appreciate what he's doing. When he's finished and we take a look back, the man has done some incredible things." — Hornets center Tyson Chandler. "Just watching it on the highlights, you're getting a chance to witness history in the league. It's something that rarely happens, and it's something that not that many players get a chance to do. I think that's the main thing, being able to be a part of that by being in the league and playing against a guy of his caliber." — Hornets forward Desmond Mason. Link: http://blog.newsok.com/nbainokc/2007/03/ Devin Brown's priceless reaction at the 6:23 mark sums up this entire game. Kobe had no room on that shot. None. Yet he just elevates and drains it. No other player in the history of the game could have made that shot or would have had the courage/confidence to take it for that matter.
