Dionne Warwick The Good Life C'est Ci Bon Live in Paris 1966

Back

Dionne Warwick appeared at the Olympia Theater for the first time when the legendary diva Marlene Dietrich introduced her to passionately enthusiastic Parisian audiences in 1963. Dionne became so wildly popular in France that the Parisian press dubbed her "The Black Pearl." In 1966 actor, singer and songwriter Sacha Distel, a French heartthrob who was very popular in Europe and the UK and Dionne Warwick were appearing together at the Olympia Theater. Distel's compositions (The Good Life, etc.) have been sung by such luminaries as Sarah Vaughan and Tony Bennett, among others. Distel had been dating Brigitte Bardot, the shapely French femme fatale before he began a romantic relationship with Dionne. Dionne was as one observer noted "tall, elegant and wickedly curvy" herself; Bardot confronted Dionne backstage at the Olympia, hurling insults at Dionne and demanding to know "Are you seeing my Frenchman?" to which Dionne coolly replied "No, I am seeing a Frenchman, but he is my Frenchman, not yours." Bardot turned on her heel and stormed out of Dionne's dressing room. Distel later resumed his relationship with Bardot but he and Dionne remained close friends until his death in 2004. Dionne recorded duets with Sacha in 1966 and also in 2000. Sacha Distel had a connection to Bacharach as well. It was Distel who had the big hit in Europe with Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head much to the dismay of BJ Thomas, who must have felt gobsmacked as much as Dionne did when Cilla Black "stole" Dionne's Anyone Who Had A Heart and rush released Black's version in the UK before Pye Records could release Dionne's original version, and Cilla's version went to the top of the charts in the UK. Alas, for Cilla, her cover version, when released in the USA died at #91 while Dionne's original hit the top 10 in the USA and became her first international million seller. Sacha also appeared in the 1970 Emmy winning NBC Special An Evening With Burt Bacharach where he performed Raindrops with Burt. This was the same special which prominently featured Dionne and Burt rehearsing "Loneliness Remembers What Happiness Forgets" at A&R Studios in NYC.
