What a beautiful arrangement of this piece. Thanks for the post. Mak I usually give little attention to the comments but you are very correct. I've tended to acquiese to Marsalis' views and style of playing which no doubt are great, but Roy's performance of this classic is, well a masterpiece. The ending from 4:37 on is pure virtuoso, and on the flugelhorn too. Outstanding!

I agree Mak. I love the space Hargrove creates with this piece. What he left out of the piece, is as important as what he's left in. Beautiful.

There is a realm in which your knowledge of music cannot help you in any way--only pure emotion and genuine love for music. Hargrove is in that realm.

Roy is amazing within his ownself! Jazz isnt about comparing, its about sharing beautiful music with the world to hear! People crack me up when they talk about who the best is....unless your Gabriel their is no best!

From Waco to Dallas,TX to being known all over the world from something that used just be fun to him. I remember some of those days when he used to play in the closet, literally in his closet because he liked the sounds that came from his horn there. How do I know this you say? Why, he's my brother! Thanks God for blessing him with such talent and the ability to share his love with the world, his horn.

You can't be the best in trumpet or flugelhorn playing. Firstly, it's a matter of taste. Secondly, you can not compare roy hargrove, miles davis, and clifford brown to each other because they all play(ed) in their own style and have diffrent meaning with their music.
